Being an influencer is no longer just a pastime, nor is it a fleeting trend. For Indonesia’s influencer community, the time, effort, and talent they invest in content creation and audience engagement lay the foundation for a lasting career.

A Southeast Asia-wide study by communications consultancy Vero found that Indonesian influencers are among the most optimistic about the longevity of their careers. Among nearly 50 influencers surveyed from the archipelago, the average response was 4.10 on a five-point scale, slightly higher than the regional average of 4.02. This signals a strong confidence in influencing as a long-term profession. And for good reason: with brands increasingly turning to influencers to shape consumer behavior, these digital creators are becoming central to marketing strategies, commanding a growing share of advertising budgets.

Today, as much as 90% of influencers’ income comes from brand sponsorship contracts, the survey finds.  In fact, 65% of respondents post sponsored content multiple times a week, while 24% post weekly.

Venya Qinthara (Minyo), Yoga Arizona, and Jang Hansol are among the top influencers in Indonesia who have turned influencing into a full-fledged profession. With their unique niches, they have successfully engaged and built strong connections with their audiences.

Listening is the best storytelling strategy

The success of an influencer career depends on how well they can build, sustain, and innovate their own personal brand. For many, this comes down to listening—truly knowing and understanding what the target audience wants.

This means continuously monitoring audience reactions, analyzing feedback, and staying attuned to shifting trends and preferences. Successful influencers do not simply push content; they engage in meaningful conversations, ensuring their messaging aligns with audience interests and expectations.

Indonesian influencers rank storytelling (27%) and quizzes (15%) as the most effective and engaging techniques for incorporating a brand’s name or product into content. Storytelling allows them to seamlessly integrate a brand’s message into relatable scenarios, from personal anecdotes to humorous skits, making the promotion feel natural rather than forced. Meanwhile, quizzes encourage active audience participation, increasing engagement by turning brand promotions into fun, interactive experiences.

By fostering a natural two-way communication, influencers cultivate trust and loyalty, which, in turn, strengthens their personal connection with the audience and enhances their ability to drive engagement for their partner brands.

‘Give us freedom, we’ll give you results’

Content creators, influencers, and key opinion leaders (KOLs) want to be co-creators of products and services they personally believe in and trust. Their unique perspectives, authentic voices, and carefully nurtured relationships with their audiences drive their bold creative expressions, making their influence powerful and genuinely earned.

For content creators, the freedom to be bold and unique isn’t just about expression; it is what connects them to their audience and, ultimately, what allows them to amplify a partner brand’s message and inspire engagement.

However, 29% of the respondents said there is a lack of creative freedom when it comes to branded content. Because personal style and authenticity matter so much to influencers, too many regulations from brands may come off as restrictive and hinder the effectiveness of collaborations. To unlock the full potential of influencer partnerships, brands must strike a balance—providing strategic direction while allowing creators the space to infuse their own voice and creativity.

When working together, brands and influencers should facilitate a transparent dialogue where they can outline expectations and ensure that strategies and messages align with both the influencer’s creative ethos and the brand’s core values, identity, and objectives. When influencers know they are valued and their creative process is acknowledged and respected, they become more willing to adapt and collaborate to overcome challenges.

Nearly 70% of respondents plan to increase their rates for sponsored content in 2025, which means higher-quality and more strategic outputs can be expected this year. This push for greater value isn’t just about pricing; it reflects the broader evolution of influencer marketing, where long-term growth and sustainability are becoming priorities.

Key opportunities shaping this evolution include the rise of social commerce, AI-driven collaborations, and cross-border partnerships. Social commerce is transforming how audiences discover and purchase products, making influencer-driven recommendations more valuable than ever. AI is enhancing content creation, personalization, and audience insights, equipping influencers with tools to refine their strategies and sustain relevance.

Meanwhile, cross-cultural collaborations are breaking geographical barriers, fostering deeper engagement between content creators and audiences, expanding brand influence, and unlocking new revenue streams.

As the creator economy matures, those who invest in authenticity, adaptability, and strategic partnerships will have a thriving, sustainable influencer career.
